Where to start… This has been quite the journey. I grew up in God’s county, Derbyshire and was a very keen player of all sports… playing rugby on a Wednesday & Saturday and local football on a Sunday. Having studied Sport Science and Biology (not just P.E.) at St. Mary’s University I moved into personal training (way before CrossFit was even a thing!). I loved the job but at that time struggled to fund my Friday and Saturday nights out! I was given the chance to go and work at Sky Sports in the football department in the production of live games and studio shows and had a wicked time there. I eventually worked my way up to being a Producer at Sky Sports and more recently IMG.
Where does CrossFit fit in I hear you ask…… Having spent many an hour in commercial gyms and doing countless HIIT sessions, I first discovered CrossFit whilst I was travelling around the world on a sabbatical, way back in 2013. My first CF Box was CrossFit Typhoon in Hong Kong, I still remember my first workout, Filthy Fifty, not knowing what toes to bar or double unders were, but I was hooked. From there I got to experience CrossFit gyms all over the world from Byron Bay and Invictus (San Diego, one of the best!) to random little ones in places like Oaxaca, Sao Paulo & Guatemala City. I would load up my i-pad in the hostels with videos on all things CrossFit to pass the endless hours of travel we had on the buses, boats and planes whilst we took in a whopping 20 countries around the globe. I was hooked and loved this new sport I had discovered. Dropping into these boxes taught me that the community of CrossFit was like no other, everyone was so welcoming and just on a path to improve themselves, whilst having fun with friends and learning cool new stuff along the way.
When I got back I signed up to CrossFit Perpetua in Battersea, which is where I first met these three fine gentlemen, Mario, Mike and Charles, who all worked as coaches there. I thought I was pretty fit ….. then I joined a CrossFit gym and realised there was a lot more fitness to be gained! I loved it so much that I took my CF Level 1 certificate in 2018, with an eye on one day being brave enough to coach a room full of people and perhaps at some point open my own place (who knows!??). The final piece of this jigsaw that now sees me a CrossFit Coach at CFV was when I decided there was more to life than stress, pressure and football during lockdown. I wanted to enjoy every day and was lucky enough to be accepted as part of the CFV family and have loved every minute of it since I joined.
As you may have guessed my passion is CrossFit and being able to be part of other people’s journey into CrossFit and helping them to make better versions of themselves is so rewarding. I have a strange like of rowing after spending a lot of the lockdowns on the Concept 2 erg, I need all the help I can get. Outside of the gym my other passions are football, live music (especially Glastonbury) and most definitely brunch…… I love brunch.
