I first caught the CrossFit bug while visiting a friend in LA in 2012.
She asked if I’d come to a class with her and, with the confidence of someone who only did an occasional run on a treadmill and an odd group class at the local leisure centre, I said ‘sure!’.
‘But we do weights’, she warned me. ‘Sounds like body pump’, I shrugged.
That day saw some of the ugliest cleans in the history of lifting and some seriously questionable rowing technique, but it also changed everything for me.
Fast forward through 5 years of CrossFit & Olympic Weightlifting competitions, getting CF lvl1 and BWL lvl1 with no actual plan to use them, and I found myself saying yes to yet another thing I only had a vague idea about: temporarily coaching Beginner’s weightlifting at my local box.
It was totally love at first sight! Within 10 minutes of taking my first class I realised THAT was all I wanted to do. Working with people and helping them improve every day, figuring out what makes each person ‘tick’ and how to get the best results, being a part of someone’s journey to a complete change of mindset around fitness and strength; all of these reasons made it easy to take a gamble and exchange corporate life for that of a coach.
Another 5 years later and I am as in love with the process as ever – nothing makes me more excited than working with someone who maybe had never stepped in a gym before or is looking at unlocking a certain skill, or challenging themselves more!
