James McShane

James found CrossFit in 2011 whilst teaching English in Seoul, South Korea. A year later he obtained his Level 1 and since then has immersed himself in the community, taking the Level 2 and Gymnastics speciality course.

When not coaching or CrossFitting, James loves going on city breaks around Europe; Florence and Pompeii currently top his future plans list, however he would love to visit South America, too. He also studies Law in his spare time as well as trying new restaurants, drinking Guinness and watching stand-up comedy.

First WOD: Fran. I scaled to an empty barbell and jumping pull-ups and it still took me around eleven minutes.

Favourite WOD: Grace. It was my first sub 3 workout and doing it RX was a milestone for me.

Least favourite WOD?: Morrison. 50-40-30-20-10 Wall balls, kettlebell swings and box jumps. This was the first WOD where I found the pain cave. It goes on FOREVER.

What is your guilty pleasure?: Anything chocolate, champagne Sundays.

What is your favourite wind-down or relaxation?: I like to read, usually alternating fiction with non-fiction

What is your biggest achievement?: Having failed to complete the double-unders in Open workout 12.4 (12min AMRAP of 150 wall balls, 90 double unders, 15 muscle-ups), the following year it was repeated for 13.3. I had worked really hard on double unders all year, and not only completed them, but also made it through 4 muscle-ups, having managed my first just a week before. Day to day it’s easy to feel as though we’re making little progress, but the cumulative effort of the year clearly paid off.
